MGM & Clase Azul’s Limited Edition Tequila

A special “Joven” blend tequila is to be made exclusively available exclusively at MGM resorts on the Vegas strip, thanks to a collaboration with Clase Azul spirits, the world’s most luxurious tequila brand.

Created by Clase Azul’s master distiller, the unique blend is composed of 20 per cent unaged Azul Plata, 50 per cent Clase Azul Reposado (aged for eight months in oak barrels ) and 10 per cent Ultra (aged for five years in Spanish sherry casks). The result is a tequila that carries a smooth and rich body; containing subtle notes of caramel, citrus, wood, vanilla and chocolate.

“We wanted to create a special tequila for our guests that cannot be found anywhere else in the world,” said MGM Resorts International Executive Director of Beverage and Corporate Mixologist Craig Schoettler. “From the stunning hand-crafted decanters to the exceptional mix of flavors distilled together, this will be one of the most exceptional and rare tequila experiences available.”

The sprit brand, like MGM International, is synonymous with luxury. It’s hand sculpted, hand painted decanters range between $100-30,000 in price, and is often seen at exclusive events such as the Screen Actors Guild Awards show.

The Best Thing About Drinking in Every State

America is a great big country with a great big list of drinks to try, and every state has something unique to offer. From cocktails you won’t find anywhere else to iconic drinking festivals to the individuals you might throw one back with, here is the best part about drinking in every single state.

New Mexico: Drinking Tequila at La Posta de Mesilla
La Posta de Mesilla is about as far south as you can go in the U.S. It’s been around for more than 150 years, and claims that people like Billy the Kid, Kit Carson and Pancho Villa all stopped by. Today, it’s a shrine to good Mexican food and lots of tequila. The bar has more than 100 tequilas and a long list of Margaritas. Notables include a special bottling of Patron Anejo Barrel Select that can only be purchased at La Posta, and a 5-year-old Clase Azul Ultra-premium Anejo. La Posta has put a big focus on its tequila program over the past 20-plus years, and it shows.

What’s the Difference Between Tequila and Mezcal?

As reposado tequilas are aged up to a year in oak barrels, their increased woodiness makes them an superb substitute for whiskey in cocktails—Clase Azul’s 8-month-aged reposado not only mixes well, but looks beautiful on your bar in a blue and white bottle hand-painted in Mexico. Añejo (aged at least one year) and extra añejo (aged 2 to 3 years) tequilas are smooth enough to sip on their own.

Mezcal is a littler trickier to find, but Del Maguey (Ron Cooper’s brand) is one of the better-known purveyors of mezcal in the U.S. The mezcal visionary offers both 100% espadin bottles (the most common varietal of agave used in mezcal) and blends of multiple agave varietals for when you feel like branching out. Houston’s cocktail heavy-hitter Bobby Heugel (The Pastry War, Tongue-Cut Sparrow) recommends the smoky-sweet, vanilla-tinged Mezcal Vago’s Elote, an espadin mezcal infused with roasted sweet corn.

Americans' thirst for 'super premium' tequila is unquenchable

While Cinco de Mayo revelers need not fear (margaritas for casual enthusiasts aren’t going anywhere), connoisseurs may see the price of their favorite extra añejos, cristalinos and jovens go up; and they certainly will for limited editions and collectors’ bottles, which, if you can find them, go for anywhere from a few hundred to several thousand dollars. (There’s even one bottle, made by Clase Azul, that costs $30,000.).

THE TEQUILA THAT COSTS $30,000 A BOTTLE

Clase Azul — which sells bottles ranging from $100 to $30,000 each — has been served at some highly exclusive affairs, including movie premieres, the Screen Actors Guild Awards and celebrity parties.
The label has come a long way since it launched in 1997. Mexican founder Arturo Lomeli admits his first tequila was low-cost, “terrible” and packaged with a tacky sombrero and mustache.

ARTURO LOMELÍ. BUILDING A LUXURY BRAND

How do you build a luxury brand? Arturo Lomeli, CEO and Founder of Clase Azul Spirits, an award-winning luxury tequila brand from Mexico, reveals the secret to their success. Refreshingly transparent, Arturo shares their rocky start; how their foray into the tequila market began with zero sales for the first 3 years, which led him back to school in 2000 for a master’s degree in marketing.

It is there that Arturo Lomeli learned the importance of creating value and uniqueness in the marketplace and after graduating, he conceived of the idea for Clase Azul Tequila Reposado - a very unique spirit sold in a beautiful, ceramic bottle made by local artisans in Mexico. These bottles are treasures that customers keep and use as decorative pieces long after the tequila has been enjoyed.

Today, Clase Azul sells its award-winning tequila around the world and has been featured in the Wall Street Journal, CNN, Forbes, Robb Report, InStyle, Food & Travel, Luxury Latin America, The Ellen Show, Influential, and many more.

Beyond simply making money, Arturo believes that success is about happiness, integrity, changing people’s lives and providing opportunities. With that in mind, he and his partner chose to establish their factory in a small community in Jalisco, Mexico, where they support the local artisans and employ 120 people, providing them with free breakfast and lunch, as well as daycare, since 80% of their staff are women.

Their most expensive bottle of tequila sells for $30,000, with all the proceeds going to a non-profit organization that Arturo’s wife runs, that further supports the local artisans.

BEST OF THE BEST 2014

Clase Azul, a boutique tequila fábrica located in the Jésus María region of Arandas in Jalisco, Mexico, not only has produced its first commercially available añejo but, in so doing, also has created what is one of the world’s few truly handcrafted spirits. After slow-roasting the organic Weber’s blue agaves (which are at least 9 years old) in traditional brick ovens called hornos, workers ferment the pressed tequila nectar using pure springwater and Clase Azul’s proprietary yeast, then double distill it in copper-lined stills. The spirit’s true transformation, however, takes place during 25 months of aging inside ex–Jim Beam bourbon barrels. The rich añejo that emerges from these vessels is deep amber in color—much darker than most añejos—and possesses flavors of caramelized cedar and citrus. The tequila is then triple filtered and bottled in handmade, hand-painted Talavera ceramic decanters that feature both glazed and unglazed surfaces to symbolize the Old and New Worlds.

ART OR TEQUILA?

Women are kind of like tequila. Ultimately, it’s what’s on the inside that counts, but it’s nice to have an outside that ain’t too shabby either. Such is the case with Clase Azul Tequila ($90.00). Beautiful on the outside (and even more impressive on the inside), the first thing you’ll notice is the eye-catching decanter, which features artwork that’s handcrafted by Mexican artists. But then you pour out some of the good stuff and realize that the passion they put into appearances is surpassed by the quality of the tequila itself. Every tequila in the Clase Azul lineup is made from only the finest organic agave plants, which are grown to maturity, for almost a decade before harvesting. Once picked, the agave hearts, or “piñas” are slow-cooked for over three days straight in traditional brick ovens to bring out all the deliciousness and evaporate everything else.

A LIFE OF PASSION: INTERVIEW WITH CLASE AZUL TEQUILA FOUNDER ARTURO LOMELÍ

“All our offices don’t have a lock and there is no roof,” Clase Azul Tequila Founder Arturo Lomeli tells me after we’ve pushed our way through the lunch rush down Sixth Avenue in New York City, and settled in a quiet spot to talk. “The idea is that we can share with everyone what we are doing. We’re pursuing the same goals. Why do I have to hide anything from the person I am working with? I’ve seen how companies get too corporate and they go by budgets and they reduce their vision into something they can hold in their hands, and what I want to tell everybody is that we’re all important.” Open is a very good way to describe Arturo Lomeli, but such an egalitarian point of view is still surprising to hear coming out of the mouth of the CEO of a tequila company that has over 200 employees and produces 14,000 bottles a month and counting. Clase Azul tequilas are made in the highlands of Jalisco, Mexico, and now imports to the U.S. (they have an importing company in California) and exports to parts of Canada, Europe, and Australia.
